Let me ask you a question first. Are you a vegan? Or thinking of turning into one? Before deciding to go for a vegan diet, I strongly suggest you go through this article and first know about Veganism and its health benefits.
Turning or being a full-time vegan is not an easy job at all! You, as a person, have to cut off from your diet; almost every ingredient you thought before was yummy!
There are lots of reasons to turn into a vegan. Maybe you are doing this from the health perspective or do not appreciate animal despise & cruelty. Well, whatever the reason is, if you decide to tick on your decisions, then there are some levels that you should practice before becoming a level 5 vegan.
First, you must know a vegan diet and how it differs from a vegetarian diet.
What is Veganism?
The term “Vegan” was minted in 1944 by a small group of vegetarians who broke away from the Leicester Vegetarian Society in England to develop the Vegan Society.
They decided not to consume dairy, eggs, or any other products of animal origin, in enhancement to refraining from meat, as do vegetarians.
The term “Vegan” was preferred by combining the first and last letters of “vegetarian.”
Veganism is defined as a way of being that attempts to exclude all forms of animal exploitation and persecution from food, clothing, or any other purpose.
Not only this, but vegans also do not appreciate any jewelry, accessories, and clothes made from animal skin or fur.
Difference Between Vegetarian & Veganism
The main difference between a vegetarian and a vegan is that a vegetarian avoids any products from slaughtered animals.
Still, a vegan avoids all animal products – whether from living or killed animals. All vegetarians eat meat or fish (and avoid flesh from other water animals such as crabs, prawns, and lobster) and eat eggs/dairy and honey.
There still a debate going on in which some vegans say honey is a vegan product and some state it isn’t!
There are 3 types of vegetarianism – according to whether they eat eggs/dairy.
- Lacto-vegetarians eat dairy but not eggs.
- Ovo-vegetarians eat eggs but not dairy.
- Lacto-Ovo vegetarians eat both eggs and dairy.
What’s the Difference Between Plant-Based & Vegan?
The term ‘plant-based refers just to the diet – which is 100% vegan.
However, Veganism extends considerably than a diet — it is a more comprehensive ethical choice that seeks to eliminate the exploitation of animals as far as is practicable.
That includes avoiding wearing animal products (e.g., fur, leather, wool), using products tested on animals, and using animals for fun.
A pescatarian shuns all meat (red and white) but eats fish and other animals from water habitats (crabs, prawns, lobsters, etc.). They may or may not choose to pick products taken from living animals such as dairy and eggs.
Flexitarians, sometimes known as semi-vegetarians, relates to someone who eats a predominantly vegetarian diet but infrequently eats meat or fish.
Technically, are there many different levels of Veganism?
Lol. No, there aren’t any specific levels of Veganism. People casually refer that they are level 1 vegan, which means that they have adopted this vegan-hood.
Like that, levels 2,3,4 are the intermediate ones who are still running on the track to become an ideal vegan.
However, the level 5 vegan is considered to be the successor.
There are not many products that are 75% vegan, that 25% of those not vegan refutes the claim entirely.
When it comes to animal products, very few are amenable to compromise, and for a good reason, because you give an inch, and the world proves time and again that it takes a mile.
What are the Different Levels of Veganism?
- Level 1 Vegan: Still cheats with a bit of turkey at Thanksgiving
- Level 2 Vegan: Still cheats with a bit of turkey fat roast potato and some dairy products at Thanksgiving
- Level 3 Vegan: Is officially cheese-free
- Level 4 Vegan: Is aware of nutritional yeast and its many applications
- Level 5 Vegan: Vegan
Puns aside, there is no before-mentioned thing as levels of Veganism! Whether for health, the world, the animals, these are just people who have decided to make a change in what they consume because they choose to care.
Vegans consider care of their health and that of the world around them.
What is a Level 5 Vegan?
So, if you are a level 5 vegan, you have probably chosen a clean life than a controversial one.
The type of vegan who rings the airline to see if they would be sat in a leather seat before buying a ticket. We are not joking in this, alright? (No pun intended)
They say no to ALL animal products, including eggs, dairy products, meat, everything.
Still, the current scenario does give insight into what an adequate level 5 vegan is.
That kind of exposure and global conversation probably introduced many to a more ethical life, which is essential.
